On this episode of G&T, Greta and Taylor consider two Shakespearean adaptations that take place outside a traditional Shakespearean setting. First, Michael Almereyda's 2000 version of Hamlet set in the world of New York finance starring Ethan Hawke. They'll transition to another 'bored rich kid' story with My Own Private Idaho: Gus Van Sant's 1991 road trip, street hustler romance that heavily incorporates elements of Henry IV, with Keanu Reeves as Scott, the contemporary analogue of Prince Hal. Will they talk way too much about Keanu Reeves? Obviously, it's 2019, the year of Keanu! But they'll also get into what things are worth carrying over directly from Shakespeare in an atypical adaptation, and which things become far too labored in their translation. Hear all this and more on this week's G&T!
